In the summer of 1642 a young slave girl named Octavia made a discovery. While playing by the carpenters shed, she found a red viewfinder buried by the roots of a sycamore tree. Confused as to what she had uncovered, she hid it in a gunny sack and smuggled it to the ruins of a shack she shared with her aunt, grandmother and 3 sisters. That night, when the moon was brightest, Octavia shuffled over to the window to take a closer look at her secret find. After dusting of the lens she made out that the “thing” resembled spectacles and was something to be looked through. She held it up to her eyes and pointed it toward the light.
